Hours after visiting his troops at Guantanamo Bay, just a few kilometers from the Cuban president's residence, US Defense Secretary Pete Higgseth threatened President Miguel Díaz-Canel, saying, "Your fate will be like Nicolás Maduro's, the president of Venezuela. Beware, and don't underestimate our wrath." The secretary, who had conducted military exercises with his troops at the US military base in Guantanamo on Cuban soil, emerged to threaten the Cuban president, stating that Washington does not rule out kidnapping Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. When journalists asked him about this possibility, the secretary responded frankly, saying that all options are on the table, but he emphasized that the final decision rests solely with President Trump.
Higseth stressed that the future of relations between the two countries depends on the decisions of the Cuban leadership and the US president, and that US forces are positioned and ready for any potential contingency.
A threat from the highest military authority in America after President Trump could amount to a final warning after months of blockade and suffocating economic pressure on Havana, following the same plan used in Venezuela. This has caused a severe fuel shortage, crippling electricity, transportation, food, health, and education on the island. But the question now is: Will Washington try again with the Cuban president?
